Summary

Multilingual translation is a cornerstone of the inclusion and equity policies adopted by Canadian urban centers. In recent years, cities have increasingly turned to machine translation (e.g., Google Translate) to render public-facing documents accessible across languages. This project investigates how Canadian urban centres integrate machine translation into their digital translation policies, with particular attention to low-resource languages. Its objectives are fourfold: 1) to offer a comprehensive overview of how major Canadian urban centers deploy machine translation for public-facing resources aimed at immigrants; 2) to compare and evaluate cities' machine translation practices against established machine translation literacy standards; 3) to assess the quality of machine-translated municipal documents in a selection of African languages; and 4) to provide actionable guidance for cities seeking to improve their use of machine translation.
