Settlement through whole-of-society integration is an important determinant of immigrant health. However, settlement cannot be narrowly defined by 'immigrants' length in Canada. It is tied to historical and ongoing colonial power relations in Canada (e.g., residential schools, slavery, exclusionary immigration policies, systemic racism, structural violence, etc.). It is also shaped by historical and current global geo-socio-political dynamics. Innovative social and technological strategies that engage immigrant communities in building relations with Indigenous peoples and across diasporic communities, prioritizing needs, and co-creating solutions to reduce health disparities are urgently needed.

The sub-studies in TRS1 are underpinned by a strong commitment toward reconciliation and principles of equity, access, and social justice. These are essential components of critical population health promotion, aligned with social innovation, meaningful engagement, capacity building, and collective empowerment - which will be woven into all research activities. The team will apply postcolonial, critical race-feminist, and intersectionality theories, and draw on integrated life-course, transculturation, and social-ecological approaches. Figure 1 illustrates the feedback loops of evidence generation, uptake and application, and knowledge dissemination within TRS1.
